Should I stop smoking around the time of surgery?

Yes. Smoking delays healing and can cause areas of skin to die leaving bad scars. Most doctors like their patients to stop smoking for two weeks before and after their operation. If you need help to stop, contact the American Lung Association 212/315 8700. Many surgeons feel that secondhand smoke can be as dangerous as smoking. If you are around smokers they should smoke outside, and if possible not come back into the house for 30-60 minutes.
