mixed races
Perhaps the most interesting and challenging group of people for the plastic surgeon is also the fastest growing. People of mixed ethnic background. This is common in Latin America where a blend of native indian and spanish ancestry is common. In this group we would include the north american hispanic and mexican mestizo cultures. In some areas this culture is enriched with an african background. It is interesting that these areas of the world are also places were there is wide acceptance of cosmetic surgery. The surgery for patients in this group is complex and interesting and cannot be covered briefly. Many different patterns and pictures have emerged and there is no other situation where the surgeon must evaluate each case carefully and advise individually. It is true that resurfacing operations tend to be less successful and that aging change operation such as facelifting often do well. Liposuction and abdominoplasty are commonly requested. Cosmetic surgery seems especially well accepted by men in this group. Rhinoplasty is also common among the north american hispanics and is often a reflection of the nose type seen in southern europeans. In some cases a flattening of the nose occurs that causes the patient to request augmentation or elevation. This may reflect either asian or african background.
