Hair Anatomy

Hair has two parts. The shaft which lies above the skin and the root which lies within the skin. The root sits in a sort of pit, called the follicle Although hair seems to grow, it is made of a dead protein called keratin, which is made by the hair matrix. This is located at the base of the hair follicle in the subcutaneous fat.

There are two types of hair:

  • villous hair is almost invisible and has no color. It is typically seen on the forehead and bald scalp.
  • terminal hair usually has color and is coarse. It is thicker than villous hair.

Villous hair may become terminal hair, for example in the beard area of adolescents and terminal hair becomes villous in baldness.
