Why would anyone have a breast reduction?
Indications for a breast reduction.
Although some patients choose breast reduction for cosmetic reasons many patients come to the doctor with medical complaints associated with the large breast. In many countries breast reduction surgery is not considered cosmetic surgery and is covered by insurance.
For many the breasts are painful and cause pain in the neck, back and shoulders. In older patients some doctors feel that the added weight may make breathing more difficult.
Large breast make it difficult to find clothes that fit and cause painful marks on the shoulders from the bra straps.
In the summer the fold beneath the breast may become inflamed and uncomfortable.
Many women, especially younger ones, are very sensitive to jokes or remarks about the size of their breasts. Large breast make it difficult to play sports and are socially embarrassing.
You are probably not a candidate for breast reduction surgery if you cannot accept the long and sometimes heavy scar and the possible loss of feeling in the nipple. Younger women who are planning to breast feed must accept the possibility that they may not be able to breast feed.
