Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a common operation. For many women it allows major changes in lifestyle. After surgery scar tissue and other changes occur in the breast. These may alter the appearance of mammograms.

The changes in the breast as a result of surgery do not increase the risk of breast cancer. A study performed in Canada shows a decrease in the chance of breast cancer after this surgery. This study also showed some evidence that the operation was linked to reduced rates of lung and cervical cancer. This may suggest that after surgery there are beneficial changes in lifestyle.

The operation is not seen as a cancer reducing operation and is not usually recommended for this reason. Still we do know that traditional breast reduction does not increase the risk of breast cancer. Plastic surgeons are studying possible side effects associated with breast reduction using liposuction. As with any newer technique long term effects such as cancer cannot be known but seem unlikely.

A cohort study of breast cancer risk in breast reduction patients.
