- correcting a broad or boxy tip of the nose during rhinoplasty
When looked at from below, the nose usually has a triangular appearance. If the tip cartilages spread more widely than normal then the nose may have a square or boxy look.
Two methods have been described to correct this problem. The first involves dividing, or transecting, the cartilage. Unless the skin of the nose is thick this can lead to a single point at the tip of the nose and risks kinking the rim of the nostril.
A generally preferred method scores or weakens the cartilage so that it is reshaped. This method does not cut the cartilage all the way through and maintains the support for the tip without leaving a visible edge to the cut cartilage.
