An alternative to using silicone sheets to reduce scar thickening is sheetsmade of mineral oil gel . These sheets slowly dissolve onto the skin. The gel provides protection from friction and pressure and seems to moisturize the skin with the mineral oil. The gel changes shape in response to shearing forces and because it is elastic it returns to its original shape.
Mineral oil gels are clear and have no smell. They seem to be non-toxic and hypo-allergenic. At this time there is no evidence that they increase the risk of infection. They are washable and can be reused, which reduces their cost. They do not contain any silicone.
These sheets are not used on open wounds and are only recommended for scars after the wound has healed. But they have been used in many areas of plastic surgery including scars, burns and pressure ulcers. Many surgeons feel that these sheets will help to reduce the scar, especially after breast reduction and mastopexy.
If you are having difficulty finding a source for oil and silicone sheets we have a page which lists the suppliers.
