Ectropion after blepharoplasty
Ectropion, or pulling down of the lower eyelid, is one of the more serious complications after blepharoplasty.
In the first few days after surgery it is commonly due to swelling or excess bleeding (hematoma).
There are many causes. It may be due to excess skin removal, injury to the muscles around the eye or contraction of scar tissue.
If mild it may have no symptoms and only be visible as an increase in visible white of the eye below the pupil (scleral show).
More severe cases may show irritation of the eye, with redness and tearing.
Most patients do not need treatment because the problem will resolve with time. More severe cases may need surgery. In almost all cases surgery should be delayed for several months to allow any natural healing to occur.
Ectropion is less common after transconjunctival blepharoplasty.
