CHEEK IMPLANTS
reasons for doing surgery
Cheek implants are placed either on the cheek (malar bone) or just below it (submalar placement) depending on the effect that is required.
There are several reasons why the operation is done and not all of them are cosmetic. Some patients need reconstruction for medical problems and this may be covered by health insurance.
COSMETIC REASONS
• Aging can cause loss of facial fat. This results in hollow cheeks and droopiness of the mid-face. The result is a prominent nasolabial fold - the line from the nose to the corner of the mouth.
• many people want the surgery to create a more pronounced cheek bone contour.
• It is common to place implants at the same time as other facial surgery, such as a facelift or rhinoplasty, to improve overall contour improvement.
RECONSTRUCTIVE REASONS
• some people are born with facial deformities. One is called a first and second branchial arch syndrome or hemifacial microsomia. In others the face never fully develops and may cause "dish-face" appearance.
• Injuries can cause a change in the face bone or loss of fat
• Surgery to remove tumors may leave indentations or irregularities
