facelift

Second facelifts: how long does a facelift last?

Most patients are happy with the result of their facelift and find that beneficial effects last for about five to ten years. However a small group of patients may need surgery much sooner than this, some even within a year. This is more common in older people and those with poor elasticity in the skin. Younger patients find that the results last longer.

The operation for a second facelift is similar to the original operation. However the method used for the original operation must be taken into consideration. This is especially true if the underlying muscle (SMAS) was tightened during the first operation.

The second operation may be easier to do than the original operation. There is often less bleeding. On the other hand some surgeons feel the risk of nerve damage is increased. Because less skin is removed there is less of a dramatic change with the second operation. Repeated operations may lead to a stretched and unnatural appearance. There is also a greater risk of loss of hair above and in front of the ear. This is because this hair may already have been damaged at the original operation.
