LIPOSUCTION
reshaping the suprapubic area or mons pubis

The area immediately above the pubic bone is called the suprapubic area or mons pubis. It is enlarged in both women and men. It can be associated with generalized fullness in the abdomen or the fat can be limited to just this area.

When patients lie down it often looks less full and so may not be treated fully in standard suctioning or abdominoplasty. If the abdominal skin is loose and a panniculus, or apron of fat and skin, covers the pubic bone it may not be visible at all.

Some patients need treatment of the suprapubic area at the same time as liposuction or tightening of the abdomen. It is also treated as a separate area in some cases.

There are two treatments, liposuction or direct excision. Most surgeons suction this area and reserve excision for especially large areas or those associated with excess skin.

Some surgeons prefer to use ultrasonic liposuction, either internal or external, to improve the removal of fat. The evidence for the increased value of either approach is limited.

In all cases of liposuction or surgery that involve this region, patients need to expect swelling and bruising of the genitals. This is often extensive and worrying if they have not been warned ahead of time. The use of an athletic support is sometimes recommend for some men.
