Dr. Hudson believes that all patients undergoing any kind of gender reassignment surgery must be in therapy. For their own safety he recommends they are in psychotherapy with a therapist experienced in gender issues for many months prior to and following the surgery. The usual recommended time is at least 6-12 months before and after. This is for the patient's safety and well-being.
In ALL cases, as a pre-requisite to performing surgery, he requires a letter before surgery from the psychotherapist that surgery will improve the patient's emotional health, and well-being. it is helpful if the patient who is considering this surgery have this letter sent to him by fax at 505-242-0060 as soon as the patient, and therapist, think that they are ready to consider surgery.

Some transexual-transgender patients misunderstand the role of therapy. It is not an obstacle to overcome to get the surgery, but an essential part of the care needed to prepare and protect patients considering this life changing surgery.
