FOUR IMPORTANT SAFETY CHECKS BEFORE COSMETIC SURGERY

Albuquerque, NM, Friday, January 11, 2008 - Today's AP story regarding the death of Donda West is a tragic reminder to both plastic surgeons, and their patients, that cosmetic surgery has the same risks and complications as any other surgery.

Unfortunately many patients remain under the impression that cosmetic surgery is somehow different and has less risk.

There are many things that patients and their doctors can do to reduce the risk of surgery.

Four of the most important safety checks for patients before surgery are:

• make certain the operation is performed by an experienced and fully trained surgeon.  The easiest way to do this is to find a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

•  be sure the surgery is performed in a safe, well equipped and nationally certified facility. When complications arise it is important that the appropriate treatment can be peformed in a timely and efficient manner.

•  the patient should be physically well, and any medical conditions evaluated by the surgeon and/or the patient's own doctor so that unnecessary risk is avoided.

• it is often unwise to perform too many operations at one time.  Increasing the length of surgery, and the number of operative sites, leads to a higher risk of complications, including infection and blood clots.

If simple precautions like this are taken, most patients can look forward to a safe and successful outcome from cosmetic plastic surgery .
