Methods of scar revision

- Unfortunately all scars are permanent but scar revision may improve their appearance. There is no technique to completely remove scars.
Scars are less noticeable if they are placed in the natural crease lines of the skin. Scar revision refers to a group of techniques that are used to make a scar less evident, most of them attempt to place scars in these natural crease lines.
- This often means removing the scar and trying to repair it in such a way as to make an improvement in its appearance. One rule of thumb is that following a scar revision you have a 90% chance the scar will be better, 9% it will be about the same and 1% that it could be worse.
- Methods of scar revision include:
removing the original scar and replacing it with a scar in the same location and direction
changing the direction of the scar so it is more in line with the natural creases (z-plasty)
breaking up the scar into a jagged line so that it is less noticeable than a straight line(w-plasty)
bringing in new tissue from the adjacent area by using tissue expanders or local flaps of skin.
- In the future stem cells may be used to help normal tissue regrow, but at this this technique remains experimental.
