- Check the facility
- You should know before you travel where the operation is going to be done. If the facility is separate from the doctor's office, ask if it has a website. If possible call and talk with the manager.
- You need to know how close the facility is to a major hospital. Where would you go if something really seriously went wrong?
- The facility should be clean and inspected by an independent, preferably government authorized agency. If the surgery is in the doctor's office, it may still be inspected but the standards are not usually as thorough as a government sponsored inspection for hospitals and day surgery units.
- Ask for photographs of the facility, the operating room and the surroundings. You do not want to travel a long way and find that your surgery is being done in a run down building in the middle of an urban slum.
- Ask for information about emergency resuscitation equipment. Remember that anyone can say anything they like about their own facility. For your own safety try and get a third party confirmation. If you know someone who lives where you are going, ask them to go and look around. The key is to know before you leave and preferably before you buy your tickets.
