- Where will you stay after the surgery?
- There are usually many options. Today with higher infection rates, hospitals are not usually considered a good option. If you need highly specialized care a hospital may be your only choice.
- Local hotels with room service often make a good alternative. Usually your room is cleaned daily and you can get food and drink by lifting the phone. In many countries a private bathroom and telephone are not standard so ask before you register. There is normally someone at the switchboard if you have an emergency.
- Private duty nurses often are willing to accompany you to a hotel of the first few hours.
- Local Bed and Breakfasts (B and B) may cater to patients from out of town. This may not provide all the services of a hotel but will give your trip a more personal and regional flavor. The owner is often willing to help with traveling to and from surgery or the doctor's office, so you can avoid smoky taxis.
- The doctor' office staff may know of a local hotel or B and B that they have found useful.
- Wherever you stay it may be possible to have a private duty nurse for a day or two after surgery. This gives you the security of being watched by someone with a medical background.
- Some doctors have special accommodations which are leased or owned by them. You should take the same attitude to this as you would the surgical suite. See if you can get someone to take a look for you. At the minimum get photographs and don't believe everything you are told, check for yourself!
