There are three stages in the removal of fat by ultrasonic liposuction.
WETTING: first the fat is made wet by injecting large amounts of intravenous fluid called the tumescent or superwet method.
LIQUIFACTION AND/OR SUCTION: next the fat is liquefied by moving the ultrasonic wand beneath then skin. In the newer methods being used in the United States market the wand is hollow and suctioning takes place at the same time. Some suction devices require that the entrance to the skin is protected so that there are no burns. Other manufacturers have produced cannulae with a self cooling system to reduce this risk. The movement is similar to that for traditional liposuction but is more gentle.
SUCTION: The cannula is moved in a longitudinal movement. It is important that the cannula is not allowed to stay in one place very long so constant movement is needed. The area may be treated again with a crisscross pattern but this is less important than with traditional liposuction. The suctioning must be both superficial and deep.
